If you’re considering getting veneers, you may be wondering exactly how many you need. After all, the more you get, the more you’ll need to invest in your smile. But when it comes to improving your appearance, cutting corners can actually make things worse, not better. Here’s a closer look at how your dentist determines how many veneers you need so you can make the most of your investment and your smile!

How many veneers a patient needs depends entirely on why they need them. For example, some patients may only want to fix one chipped or misshapen tooth. In this case, they would likely only need one veneer. If it is one of the top two front teeth, however, it may be better to treat both teeth, so they are guaranteed to match.

For other patients, they may want to change the appearance of the front row of teeth. Traditionally, dentists have recommended at least six veneers on each arch for this, however, today’s standard is typically eight. This allows all six of the front teeth to be treated but also provides coverage for two more on each arch in case you smile particularly wide. For those who want to maximize their new smile, ten on each arch can make a beautiful impact.

If you are looking to save money and would like to get veneers mostly to cover stains, you may be able to treat some teeth with professional whitening instead of putting veneers on all the others. This allows you to save money up front, but keep in mind that professional whitening is not permanent and if you’re not careful you can re-stain your teeth so noticeably they no longer match your veneers!

Remember, how many veneers you need depends on your individual smile goals. If you aren’t sure what will look best or work well for your situation, your dentist will be happy to make recommendations achieve those objectives and best suit your lifestyle.

About Dr. Tomaszewski

Dr. Stephen Tomaszewski (aka Dr. Steve) grew up visiting his dad in his own dental practice. Watching his father and mentor work inspired him to want to be a dentist too, and after earning his Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University and his DDS degree from the LSU School of Dentistry, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps and completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency while living in Okinawa, Japan.

He eventually served on an extended joint task force mission in Pakistan providing humanitarian care, eventually becoming a clinic director at Whiting Field Naval Air Station in Florida. In 2007, he returned home to Slidell and joined his father’s practice, eventually taking it over in 2010 so his dad could retire.

Since then, he has worked as a part-time clinical assistant professor at LSUSD and has even been voted as a Top Dentist every year by his peers in New Orleans Magazine.
