If you’re missing between one and three consecutive permanent teeth, an excellent restoration solution may be a dental bridge. These prosthetics attach to two healthy anchor teeth and unlike dentures, can only be removed by your dentist. But much like other temporary restorations, dental bridges will eventually need to be replaced. Thankfully, with proper care and usage, yours may last up to 15 years!

Here’s everything you need to know about dental bridges, and how to keep yours looking and working great for as long as possible!

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a series of prosthetic teeth that are cemented into place over a gap in your arch. They anchor in place on two healthy teeth on either side of the space in your arch. The crowns of your bridge look and feel like natural teeth, so nobody will know that they’re prosthetic. In fact, they even function like real ones, too!

What are Dental Bridges Made of?

Dental bridges are typically made of the same durable porcelain used in many types of dental restorations such as crowns. This gives them both the look and feel of your real teeth, so they don’t appear “fake” or obvious when you smile.

There are two types of dental bridges. Regular dental bridges, and dental implant bridges. Both types cannot be removed by the patient, but with an implant bridge you can expect an even longer life expectancy for your prosthetic. Many last for 20 years and beyond!

Instead of relying on healthy anchor teeth, implant bridges are attached to your jaw with two titanium dental implants that stay permanently in place. While you likely won’t need to replace the implants themselves (they have a 95 percent success rate) you may eventually need to replace the crowns (teeth). Still, they are much more durable than regular bridges and other types of restorations like partial dentures.

How Do I Make My Dental Bridge Last?

Dental bridges can typically last up to 15 years with proper care and usage. To keep them in great condition, follow these helpful guidelines:

  • Brush your teeth (including your bridge) twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Please note that whitening toothpaste will not work on bridges, as the crowns cannot change shade.
  • Though you cannot floss between the crowns in the center of your dental bridge, it is very important that you floss the rest of your teeth, and between the anchor teeth and your natural teeth.
  • Never use your bridge to chew anything excessively crunchy like ice cubes or hard candy.
  • Never use your bridge for anything but food; no tearing open packaging, biting your nails, or chewing on pen caps!
  • Visit your dentist twice a year for your regular, biannual exam and cleaning appointments.
  • Notify your dentist if you notice any pain or sensitivity around your bridge, or if your bridge becomes damaged.

Remember, dental bridges are a natural looking, durable, and functional way to replace missing permanent teeth. To learn more about whether this treatment can help your smile, speak to your dentist today!
